The World Handicap System™ (WHS™) came into effect in Great Britain and Ireland in November 2020. The system is designed to:

• to be a single handicap system that is used around the world.
• give golfers a Handicap Index that is portable, that allows for equitable competition between golfers regardless of the courses at which they play.
• attract more players to the game, by making an accurate handicap accessible to all golfers, not just club members who regularly participate in competitions.
• make the game more enjoyable, by fostering fairness, flexibility, and inclusivity for players of all abilities.
• make handicapping more logical and easier to understand, by focusing on recent scoring potential rather than a rigid, slow-changing number.
