Big with for Somerset and keeps the 1st Team in the chase for this years Channel League title. Gloucestershire, Gwent & Glamorgan still to come with the table wide open this year. We are 3 wins and 1 loss. Every County has lost at least 1 match!
Come on Red Army!

Most points scored throughout the week by any county player, 8 wins and 1 halved match
Played over 18 holes on Wednesday 14th June as fog wipes out play on Tuesday and am Wednesday
With 5 players in the clubhouse on -2 as a playoff looming, Curtis Edwards came in and blew the field apart. His individual achievement minimised the disappointment of our team's 2nd place in the overall Team Championship. Gloucestershire's 1 shot victory see our neighbours go forward to represent the South West in this year's National Finals.
A great all round effort by Team Somerset.
Sunday 21st May 2023
An early start with no overnight stay meant many leaving home by 6.00 did nothing to detract from this great result.
By the young and old representing the county. The John Brothers Dewi and Dylan from Saltford were out first
and brought home a I up Win against a local army pairing. The next three pairings all lost and
it was left to another Young pairing of A Marshall and Ashton Wylie to bring home another 1up in the last match
Leaving the score Wiltshire 3 Somerset 2 at lunch.
The first four afternoon singles only brought one win home form Max Texeira but in good
County tradition the fight back began, Kobe Adams brought home a fine win 4 and 3 next up
Came Craig Adams playing Garry Slade one of Wiltshire's best, Craig was 5 Down at the turn
But all square playing the 18th and after Garry hit the pin with his 3rd Shot Craig sank a 15 footer
to win the game 1 up incredible golf played at times. The next two matches saw fine wins 2 and 1
for Luke Appleton and Alex Marshall the later bringing home his second point of the day.
Next up was another long term performer for the county Justin Lane who needed no lucky breaks in this round
Beating Lewis Hayward who had just won the Long Ashton Vase 2 and 1 Job Done 8 -7 victory for Somerset.
Our last player Ashton Wylie playing Wiltshire County Champion F Titcombe put in a fine performance fighting
Back from 5 down to losing on the last 1 down with a put that lipped the hole.
A great result for a young enthusiastic Somerset team guide home by Captain mark Wait and the two old stagers.
Fantastic Result and great squad rotation as Somerset come home with the points. Some new faces, some old faces, but in the end a team performance and a never say die attitude as the Red Army fight back over the last 9 holes to win away. Next up South West Week, the captain has some difficult choices to make before the team is announced soon.
Sunday 23rd April 2023
The SGU Red Army will re-assemble at Perranporth on Saturday 10th June to compete in this years South West Week. This weekend made everyone realise how local knowledge will be key as the away team struggled to pick the right line! Preperation? YES did we learn? YES will we do better? lets hope so!
CHANNEL LEAGUE v DEVON at BURNHAM & BERROW
Sunday 2nd April 2023
Due to be played at Weston-s-Mare, the fixture was moved 48 hours before tee off due to heavy rain and a waterlogged course at Weston.
Burnham & Berrow came to the rescue and where able to accommodate the match, played over both Channel & Championship Courses.
The morning foursomes began at 09.20 on the Channel. First up Freddie Turnell and Huxley Howell. Match 2 saw Curtis Edwards pair up with Josh Stancer. Both games went the full distance, both ending even.
In match 3 Phil White and Stanley Richardson also went to the last, losing 1 down. It looked as though match 4 was destined for the final green , and so it proved as Craig Adams and Andy Isaacs took a 1 hole lead to the 18th tee. Winning the last for a 2 hole victory and a narrow 3-2 lead at lunch thanks to the final pairing of Justin Lane and Stuart Ponfield impressive return to 1st team golf, winning 6&5.
The singles were played on the Championship Course and turned out to be a very good afternoon for Mark Wait and his side. Wins for Edwards 1 hole, Howell 6/5, Turnell 5/3, Isaacs 4/3, Adams 3/2, Stancer 3/1 & Richardson 1 hole and an overall team result 10 - 5, Somerset are off to a very impressive start to the 2023 Channel League Season.
Burnham & Berrow, a massive thank you.
WINTER ORDER OF MERIT 2022/23
The Winter Order of Merit season is reaching its conclusion having completed 5 of the 6 medal rounds spread across the county.
The final round will be played on the Championship Course, Burnham & Berrow on Sunday 26th February.
Burnham Channel Course hosted the opening event of the series back in October, with strong winds and extremely difficult scoring conditions.
Since then, rounds at Tall Pines, The Mendip, Weston-s-Mare and Minehead & West Somerset has seen the 1st team squad get together on the course throughout the long winter months and compete over 18 holes in medal competition.
The format of the league will see the lowest aggregate score (best 4 from 6 rounds) top the table, it's the league's inaugural season.
Designed to assist pre-season preparation and build upon the excellent squad togetherness, it has given the county coach and captain valuable insight to form and commitment. There is the added benefit of blooding up and coming junior talent, allowing our players of tomorrow to get a feeling of county golf at the highest level.
The SGU would like to thank all the host clubs and their members for giving up valuable tee time throughout winter, in support of the SGU.
Its not a done deal but Phil White leads the way and will take some catching around his home course on the 26th.
