SALTFORD TO REPRESENT CLUB & COUNTY AT THE EG NATIONAL FINALS
After two rounds on Woodhall Spa’s Bracken Course, Saltford were crowned English Junior Champion Club 2024 at the home of England Golf.
With the two best Stableford scores from three counting for each team, Rebekah Muncer, Annika Seward and Scarlett Thorp - the only all-female team in the field - all contributed across the two-day event, as they racked up a total of 150 points – four more than their nearest rivals Leek.
A total of 32 clubs from all over England took part in the championship having previously come through the qualifiers, with each County Union affiliated to England Golf able to nominate one club to compete.
Day one saw Muncer rack up a magnificent 43 points with a birdie on the 1st followed up by three pars, while Seward scored 36 points thanks to a birdie on the par-5 17th and two pars. Their combined total put team Saltford on 79 points and in pole position heading into the final day.
As round two got underway, Saltford held a three-point lead over the rest of the field, and despite the weather conditions worsening overnight as the wind swirled around the Bracken Course, the team from Somerset were able to stretch their advantage further.
After her first-round points total was not included in the team’s day one scoring, Thorp came out strong to start the final round, racking up points on all but one hole, including a brilliant birdie on the 14th. With five pars to add to the birdie, Thorp finished round two with 39 points – the second-best total of the day.
Saltford’s other score on day two again came from Seward, who managed a splendid 32 points to give the team an overall score of 150.
Leek themselves enjoyed a fine two days with a whopping 40 points from Carter on the final day, alongside 34 for Foxall. Carter and Foxall also combined for the team’s top-score on Wednesday with Carter scoring 39 points and Foxall 33 points as their overall score of 146 was just four behind Saltford.
Saltford A led by Harley Sandell 7 handicap, 36pts and supported by Ava Hirons 13 handicap 34pts and Raphael Clay 15 handicap 30pts, winning total 100pts.
It was very close for runners up, eventually going to Mendip B on 93pts with Saltford C pipping Saltford B on countback, both finishing on 92pts
George Marshall 23 handicap from Saltford walked away, with the Mendip Junior Vase, having returned a very impressive 42pts, runner up, Freya Keirl 30 handical (Wells) and Joshua Whittle 24 handicap (Saltford) 37pts.
Thank you Mendip GC for a great day.
The winning team will have the opportunity to represent club & county at this years English National Finals, to be played August 15th (practice) 16th & 17th August at the EG National Golf Centre Woodhall Spa. This is an opportunity to play a top class Championship Course in a National Event. Somerset have been well represented over the past few years with teams from Saltford, and Mendip doing extremely well at Woodhall Spa. In 2019 Saltford became National Champions and in 2021 Mendip finished runners up. Trust us when we state without fear of contradiction, the finals are truly magical experience for all involved. The SGU will make a financial contribution of £250.00 to assist with the overall expense of the finals to the winning team.
Our thanks goes to the Mendip GC for hosting this event and our sincere apologies to Saltford GC who would be hosting this year had it not been for unforeseen fixture congestion.

Winning the event has meant the profile of juniors within the club has been raised and the club are extremely proud of this achievement. Just over 4 years ago, when I started as Head Professional, the club had just 3 juniors and now with a thriving junior section of over 45 juniors, many with handicaps that are reducing fast and with juniors winning club competitions, it shows that juniors are the lifeblood of the club and the future of the game. With the arrival of PGA Professional Alex Todd as Head of Coaching and Game Development, the club is moving forwards at a rapid rate in encouraging not only junior golf but also beginner golf and in particular ladies golf, this fabulous achievement bolsters the hard work done at the club in securing its future.
The current holders of the National Championship are Saltford so lets hope The Mendip can keep the title in Somerset.
Somerset Golf Union thank Saltford GC for hosting the event

Somerset had come very close to winning the National Finals none more so than Worlebury who finished as runners-up in 2015.

Saltford Golf Club were today crowned the England Golf Junior Champion Club for 2019 at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf. The team of Dewi John, Dylan John and Alex Georgiou posted a winning score of 149 points based on the best two cards from three over two rounds, playing on the famous Hotchkin Course. Parkstone Golf Club came second with 148 points and the Kendleshire Golf Club came third with 145 points.
Lying 12th overnight with a round 1 points total of 68, the boys played phenomenal golf in round 2 finishing with an incredible 81 point total which moved the team into top spot. Special mention for Dewi John who played round this extremely difficult course in 2 under gross (including two 3-putts!), scoring 42 points off a handicap of 4. Dylan John added a hugely valuable 39 points to Dewi’s score and Alex Georgiou’s 35 points second round score ensured they had a very strong third card in case count back was required.
Congratulations to all three boys on a great win. Saltford Golf Club have been Somerset’s representative in this competition several times in the last 10 years. It was very rewarding to win this hugely prestigious England Golf Competition and we look forward to the chance to defend the title at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire, next year.
