After a very wet and troublesome day on the course few were left standing by the time the presentation got underway. Sadley, no photos of our winners.
A late start due to fog, with thunder & lightning threatening to abandon play for the remainder of the day mid-afternoon and light fading the final golfers made their way back to the course to complete their round.
Thankfully all completed and regardless of the weather, the day was, as it always is, a great end to a very long season.
Massive thank you to Bath Golf Club. Members and all staff for the day and fingers crossed in 2024 for better weather.
On Thursday the 6th of October 73 seniors from all over the county played the Seniors County Stableford at Weston-s-Mare Golf Club. Strong winds and rain the day before had given away to better weather and as play got underway at 09.28am.
The event is a great way to finish the Counties domestic Championships 2022. Individual prizes, Team Prizes and Age Group prizes give the golfer many opportunities not only to play a well presented course, with excellent putting surfaces and some very tricky pin positions! but to go away in profit!
In 2021 when last played the host club, Long Sutton walked away with the Team prize. This year’s early pace setters, Wells had already won the SGU Senior’s Inter-Club knockout and the Windwhistle Trophy this season, their combined stableford points total of 104 (best 3 from 4) looked a good target.
As the scores began to tally up it was obvious the individual score of 40pts, set by Cricket-St-Thomas member Martyn Jewell gave his fellow team members a very realistic chance of topping the Wells GC return and so they did with a team score of 108pts. Congratulations Richard, who also picked up the individual trophy and team members, Andrew Rowland, Michael Hone and Derek Gardener.
The runner up in the individual, John Vickerstaff, representing Clevedon GC returned gross 72 for a fine 37pts and Wells member Martin Barnes was 3rd on count back. Martin’s Wells team finished 2nd overall with another Cricket-St-Thomas team coming 3rd
Age group winners on the day were Richard Triscott Farrington Park, Tony Scott, The Mendip and Roger Williams, Cricket-St-Thomas.
All in all, a great day on and off the course from beginning to end. Our thanks to the members of Weston-s-Mare GC, management for putting on the event.
On Friday the 1st of October 84 seniors from all over the county played the Seniors County Stableford at Long Sutton Golf Club. Heavy rain the day before had given away to better weather and as play got underway ay 08.52 the sun began to shine as the wind picked up.
If you haven’t played Long Sutton recently you may not recognise the course or clubhouse when you do. The course has benefited from major improvements over the past two years with new drainage and extensive renovation of bunkers and improvements to layout. The clubhouse has been transformed internally and externally.
This Championship is a great way to finish the Counties domestic Championships 2021. Individual prizes, Team Prizes and Age Group prizes give the golfer many opportunities not only to play the course for so little fee but to go away in profit.
In 2019 when last played The Mendip walked away with individual and team prize. This years Mendip team were amongst the early starters and having posted a reasonable score eventually finished 4th in the team event.
In 3rd and 2nd place teams from Cricket St Thomas returning 101 & 104 pts combined. But no team could match the winning score of 111pts returned by Long Sutton members, Richard Morgan, Graham Brimble, Richie Horton & John Williams
The individual trophy was won by 15 handicapper Richard Triscott (Farrington Park with a fine score of 40pts. Graham Brimble took runners up spot on countback from joint 3rd Richard Morgan and John Wandless (Cricket St Thomas) all on 39pts.
Age group winners, Keith Hunt (Cricket St Thomas, Chris Fairchild (Brean) James Siabi (Cricket St Thomas & Roger Davis (Cricket St Thomas)
The day was enjoyed by all, the greenkeepers presented the course in fine order regardless of the previous day’s downpour. The kitchen staff welcomed all on arrival and the bar staff were kept busy with a full clubhouse at presentation.
The County President Tony Mason is pictured with the winners of the individual and Team trophies.
