Today marked the commencement of the Under 14’s Winter Training, and it was great to witness the full squad in attendance displaying their eagerness and commitment to the upcoming season.
The day was divided into two smaller groups, with six boys attending the morning, and five attending the afternoon session, thus allowing for a more concentrated and personalised coaching experience. This increased one-on-one time with each player, enabling Ian to address specific needs and provide more tailored guidance.
With both sessions, the training kicked off with a comprehensive video-based technical analysis focusing on iron play. This enabled the boys to gain valuable insights into their individual playing styles, paving the way for targeted improvements with Ian giving each boy specific drills to work into their game over the winter period.
Both sessions concluded with a video-based technical analysis on their putting stroke and specific drills to help the boys improve, the session concluded with an engaging putting competition, which saw a closely contested event unfold. The boys showcased their skills and determination, underscoring the talent and potential within the squad.
Ian will be sending out individual coaching reports to the parents, summarising the progress made during the session and outlining areas for further development. This will serve as a valuable resource for both players and parents as they continue their golfing journey.
In preparation for the next session scheduled for February, Ian has encouraged all the boys to set their personal goals for the upcoming year. This exercise will not only provide a clear direction for their training but also foster a sense of ownership and motivation within the squad.
All the boys felt the first County Golf Winter Training Session was a resounding success, marked by a high level of participation and dedication from all involved. The combination of technical analysis, individual attention, and spirited competition created an environment conducive to growth and improvement. As the players embark on their journey towards the next session in February, their defined goals will undoubtedly serve as a guiding beacon, propelling them towards their desired achievements.

Venue - Mendip Spring Golf Club, Honeyhall Lane, Congresbury, BS49 5JT
Time - 12.30pm - 2.30pm
We would kindly ask everyone to meet by the practice putting green.
Parents will not need to stay with the boys when the assessment begins but we will ask that if you are not waiting in the clubhouse, you provide us with a contact number in case we need to get hold of you.
When the assessment begins, Our coaches will split the boys into groups and assess their overall ability on the driving range, short game area and the putting green, the assessment should take no longer than 2 hours, and we ask all parents to be back by 2.30pm
There are 3 squads that we are assessing for, U12’s futures squad, U14’s squad, and a development squad, these squads are not necessarily picked on handicap but also on future potential.
After the assessment ends, our coaches will select the squads for the coming year and will email everyone back with feedback and whether the boys have been successful.
In the meantime, If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards
Chris Roach

2022 COACHING DAYS CONFIRMED
June 12 Main Under 14 at Burnham & Berrow - pm 9 holes on Channel Course
Somerset's Under 14 side play a series of competitive matches throughout the season against our neighbouring counties. The squad is generally selected in the autumn in order to participate in the winter training and coaching programmes established by the Performance Coach and Team Manager . However, they will always be looking out for emerging talent identified by the Development Group that run alongside, as well as keeping an eye out for newcomers, either those new to the game or who move into the area. The matches we play are:
Jack Roberts League. We compete with Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire for the Jack Roberts Memorial Trophy. This was presented by the Dorset Golf Union in honour of their former Juniors Secretary from Weymouth. The matches comprise of 9 holes of greensomes in the morning, followed by 18 holes of singles after lunch.
Friendly matches are played against Glamorgan and Gloucestershire in the same format as the Jack Roberts League matches
South West Counties Golf Association (SWCGA) Under 16/Under 14 Championship. We take a team of 9 boys, 6 Under 16s and 3 Under 14s to represent Somerset in this annual competition. The boys will compete individually for the respective SWCGA Championship. The overall winners in each category will be invited to represent the South West in the England Golf Age Group National Finals.
Collectively the squad will compete for the Inter-Counties Shield with the best 7 scores to count. We play against Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
Our programme of matches ended with a win for the Under 14 team in a friendly against Gloucestershire. We were delighted to end the season on a high note, coming away with a handsome win 10-5. This was a very competitive match were we managed to win the morning foursomes 4.5-0.5. The singles were much closer with fortunes fluctuating, but we held on to win.
Our team contained representatives from all 3 of our Squads which shows the strength in depth we have. In all, 22 players represented Somerset Under 14s this year. Our playing record ended as
Played 6 Won 2 Halved 1, Lost 3
