SOMERSET 8.5 GLAMORGAN 6.5 IN THE CHANNEL LEAGUE
The Vale Resort GC
Sunday 2nd September
The U18s final match was played at The Vale of Glamorgan on the National course on Sunday 3rd Sept in the Channel league.
It was a glorious hot and sunny day, and the course was well presented.
In the morning foursomes there were good wins for Ashton Wylie / Josh Mowat 5 +3 and Noah Jones/Peter McGivern 3 + 1. Tom Canavan/Cameron fear and Ollie Tripp/Troy Young lost both of their matches on the 18th 1 down. With the home side a player short Somerset took a narrow 3-2 lead into the afternoon singles.
After 11 holes of the singles Somerset were only down in one match and with healthy leads in six matches they looked to be heading for a clear win. Glamorgan had other ideas and fought hard to turn the tables. They overturned healthy Somerset leads in four matches to take 3 wins and a 1/2. Ollie Tripp, Noah Jones, and Troy young played some impressive golf to secure good winning margins leaving the match in the balance. Needing a win from the remaining three matches Josh Mowat saw his 3-hole advantage reduced to 1 on the 17th. He held his nerve and hit the 18th green in regulation to halve the hole and take the win which secured the match result for Somerset. Peter McGivern played in a high-quality match and was unlucky to lose out on the 17th 2+1. The halve from Morgan Couch extended the margin of victory in the singles to 5.5 - 4.5.
The win for Somerset leaves them well ahead in the U18 Channel league, undefeated for the season. Gloucestershire have two games to play and mathematically can catch up but need to win both matches by substantial margins.
My thanks to the boys for playing well in the heat, to Glamorgan for their hospitality, to The Vale resort for providing a testing golf course in good condition and to the parents for their support on the day and throughout the season.
To the nine players leaving the U18s I wish them every success in the future and hope they can continue to develop as golfers.
SOMERSET 10.5 GWENT 4.5 IN THE CHANNEL LEAGUE
at NEWPORT GC
Friday 18th August
The U18's extended their unbeaten run in the Channel league with a convincing 10.5 - 4.5 win at Newport GC against a young Gwent side on the 18th August.
The course was in excellent condition and provided a good test for the players. The weather was not very kind with continuous rain.
In the morning foursomes Gwent played well in the first two matches and defeated Somerset pairings Dylan John /Cameron Fear and Tom Cananvan/Harley Sandell. Making their debut for the U18's from the U16 squad Noah Jones (Oake Manor) and Peter McGivern (Taunton & Pickeridge) played well to secure a 5+3 win Ollie Tripp and Troy young from Worlebury continued their winning streak with a convincing 7+6 win. The final Somerset pair of Lowen Stephens and Morgan Couch secured a hard fought 4+3 win. So after the foursomes Somerset were 3-2 ahead.
In the afternoon singles the first five matches went to Somerset to secure a win for the team. Ollie Tripp continued his good form with a 7+5 win. Dylan and Noah also won by a good margin 5+3. Cameron Fear played in a close match which he finally won on the 18th 1up. Troy Morgan and Lowen took the final 2 and a halve points to win the singles 7.5 -2.5.
Somerset now sit at the top of the U18 Channel League table. A win against Glamorgan should secure the top spot.
My thanks to the players for enduring testing conditions and performing well. Also many thanks to Graham Harris of Gwent for organising the day to Newport GC for providing a good course in excellent condition and for their hospitality. Finally thanks to the parents for their support on the day and to County first team Captain Mark Waite for attending and supporting the team.
We look forward to the u18s final match at The Vale of Glamorgan on the 3rd Sept
SOMERSET 9.5 CORNWALL 5.5 IN THE ROY GREENAWAY TROPHY
at FARRINGTON PARK
Monday 6th August
The U18s played their Greenaway Trophy match v Cornwall at Farrington park Golf club on the 7th August. It was a fine bright day with a moderate breeze and the course was well presented.
The home side had a number of players making their final appearances for the U18s. Captain Alex Marshall is off the the United states and we wish him every success. Theo Anderson-Gannon will be at school for another year but with a birthday the wrong side of January he moves out of the juniors. George Geddes begins his winter rugby training. All three contributed to the morning foursomes. Alex and Theo winning 4+2. George playing with Tom Canavan played in a very close match which was halved. Somerset's other point came from in form Ashton Wylie and Troy Young. With the foursomes halved it was everything to play for in the afternoon singles.
The home side got off to a great start with wins for Alex and Theo George and Ashton. Cameron Fear found tough opposition and was beaten on the 16th. Joe Cox fought back form 3 down to take his match down the 18th but lost out. Troy Young led for the first time with a birdie on the 17th but his opponent returned the compliment on the 18th to halve the match. Farrington player Josh Mowat played well to secure the team win with a solid 4+3 yoctory. Morgan Couch finished proceedings with a fine 4 + 3 win. So Somerset took the singles 7-3 and the match 9.5 - 5.5. They now lead the standings in the Greenaway trophy with two wins form 3. Dorset player Cornwall at Falmouth on the 18th and are the only side who can overtake us despite our 12-3 win against them at Lyme regis.
Thanks to Farrington Park who looked after both teams well , to the parents for their support an most importantly to the players.
The U 18s have two remaining fixtures in the Channel league away to Gwent and Glamorgan.

SOMERSET 12 WILTSHIRE 3 IN THE CHANNEL LEAGUE at BATH
Thursday 27th July
The U18s played very well at Bath GC to secure a good 12-3 win against Wiltshire in their channel league match. We thought it was going to be a tough day when we arrived in wet and windy conditions. Fortunately, the weather cleared in time for the first foursomes tee and continued for the day.
In the morning foursomes there were some close matches, George Geddes (Taunton & Pickeridge) and Tom Canavan (Enmore) taking the 18th for a 1 up win. Worlebury pairing Ollie Tripp and Troy Young birdied the 17th with a 20ft downhill left to right put for the win when it looked as though they would be heading down the 18th. The closest foursomes match involved Lowen Stephens (Wells/Farrington) and Morgan Couch (Taunton & Pickeridge) who won the 18th for a hard-fought half. Four wins and a half was a great return from the morning.
In the afternoon singles Theo Anderson-Gannon (Burnham & Berrow) set the standard with an impressive 6+5 victory. The winning score was matched by Josh Mowat (Farrington) Ollie Tripp and Morgan Couch. Cameron Fear (Tickenham) won his match at the last and Alex Marshall (Farrington) halved his match to give the home team the overall win. Further wins gave a 7.5 - 2.5 scoreline in the singles.
My thanks go to Professionals Russell Covey and Josh Hilliard for looking after the team, it was good to see the team warming up on the excellent range facility. Further thanks to Bath Golf club for feeding both teams and providing a course in excellent condition. It was good to see Somerset's past president Geoff Ogden supporting the team. Final thanks to U18 coach Paul Mitchell for attending.
The next U18 match is at Farrington on the 7th of August in the Greenaway trophy v Cornwall.

The U18s played a very hard fought and close match with Dorset at lyme regis. The course was very well presented and provided a good test with excellent greens.
In the morning foursomes Worlebury players Ollie Tripp and Troy young won 6+5 but all other matches were close with Somerset judge edging the results 3-2.
The afternoon singles were played in a great spirit with both sides being on top at different stages of play.
Alex Marshall, Cameron Fear and Ollie Tripp secured good wins whilst Theo, Ashton and Troy lost to some good play. When Lowen lost on the 15th the match was tied at 6-6. Josh Mowat was 3 down playing the 10th but turned his match around to win on the 18th where both players hit their second shots to the left hand bunker side by side. Both played impressive up and downs.
George Geddes played in a very close match taking the 18th to win 1up. Morgan Couch completed the win with a 4+3 win against 12 year old Archie Trott who played some impressive golf.
The good team spirit extended to the Junior organisers with Dave Shenton sharing a buggy with me for the afternoon singles. My thanks to Dave and all at Lyme Regis Golf club for providing an excellent venue good food and hospitality. Also huge thanks to the parents that drove and supported on the day.
The U 18s play next at Bath Golf Club v Wiltshire on the 27th July
Somerset Finish 2nd as Wiltshire win the Team Championship by 6 shots.
Very well played Theo Anderson Gammon (left) finishing 3rd over all in the individual championship 71-72=143 -1
RESULT SOMERSET 7.5 GLOUCESTERSHIRE 7.5
The Under 18s started their 2023 Channel league fixtures with a home tie against Gloucestershire at Weston-Super-Mare Golf club on the 18th June.
After the lengthy dry spell of weather the fairways were bone dry and hard. The greens were excellent. On a dry warm day with only a slight breeze the conditions were favourable. The risk of heavy rain and thunder did not materialise.
Somerset got away to a great start taking the foursomes 4-1. The matches were close and it was a combination of good play and some unlucky shots form Gloucestershire that contributed to the score. Josh Mowat (Farrington) and Ollie Tripp (Worlebury) won on the 18th to take the final foursomes point.
After a pasta lunch the teams were able to start the singles early. Gloucestershire got away to a fast start and after 11 holes had secured 1 win 8+7 were up in 7 of the remaining games all square in 1 and 1 down in the other. Team Somerset needed to react and fight back.
In the well fought top matches Alex Marshall and Theo Anderson-Gannon lost their matches. George Geddes managed to overturn an early deficit to halve his match.Ashton Wylie,Ollie Tripp and Lowen Stephens lost their games leaving the away team just half a point short from securing what had seemed an unlikely victory after the morning play. Cameron Fear and Morgan Couch secured home wins bringing the total scores to 6.5 -7.5 in favour of Gloucestershire.
The last game was between Josh Mowat and Reggie Phelps. It was a hard fought game with both players gaining the advantage at times. Standing on the 18th tee the game was all square. Reggie hit a decent drive ,Josh hit a good shot but found the right hand bunker 135 yards from the green. Josh played a majestic shot which pitched 2ft from the pin and stopped. Reggie also found the green but a few feet away. Reggie just missed his put and conceded Josh's which gave Somerset the point they required to half the match .
Congratulations to Gloucestershire for performing well in the singles and securing an unlikely tie. In the end it was a hard fought tie for the home team.
My thanks to all at Weston who looked after both teams so well.

SGU Junior Organiser/U18 Team Manager/President
The team were looking forward to their Greenaway Trophy match at Tiverton on the 1st of June. Unfortunately, an accident on the M5 resulted in a delay for some of the team and a late change to the foursomes' pairings with two boys held up in traffic until well passed the allotted tee times. The teams were unable to play one game and agreed to half a point each.
Irrespective of the problems the top two pairings for somerset of Alex Marshall/Ashton Wylie and Theo Anderson-Gannon/Dylan John took one and a half points with a win and a half. The fourth pairing featuring Harley Sandell (Saltford) and Luke Burbridge (Long Sutton) both making their first appearance for the U18s. They played well and were unfortunate to lose on the 18th in a very tight match.
3-2 to Devon in the foursomes was a decent result with all to play for in the afternoon singles.
The course was well presented (thanks to Tiverton's head greenskeeper ex Somerset player Bailey Langford) the weather was pleasant but with a cold northerly wind the tree lined course presented a tough challenge. The greens were in great condition but were testing.
In the top five singles matches three went the distance with Alex Marshall and Dylan John counting themselves unfortunate to both lose their games on the 18th. Ashton Wylie played well to secure a win on the 18th and Theo played some great golf to win 3+2. At this stage of the afternoon Somerset were ahead in four of the remaining games and looking like favorites for the win. All credit to Devon who turned several matches around securing halves in both Harley Sandell and Morgan Couch's games and narrow wins against Ollie Tripp 1 up and Luke Burbridge 2+ 1. George Geddes battled back from being 4 down early on but eventually lost out to a tough opponent 2+1. Cameron Fear played well to pick up Somerset's final point with a comfortable 5 + 4 win. Congratulations to Devon on their win.
It's fair to say that the traffic problems had some say in the result, but the team fought well and played some impressive golf when under pressure. It was great to see the two debutants performing well.
The U 18s look forward to their next match v Gloucester in the channel league at Weston Super Mare on the 18th of June.
My thanks to Tiverton GC for hosting us and providing a great course good food and hospitality and, of course, to all who drove and endured the lengthy delays on the M5 and surrounding routes.

FREDDIE TURNELL WIINER U18's & NOAH JOHES WINNER U16's
Pictured at the presentation made by Ian Poole County President & Junior Manager
U18s & U16s 36 Hole medal (White tees)
The day after the King's coronation and Somerset's Junior boy golfers were able to play in sunny warm and relatively calm conditions for the 2023 Junior Championships at Worlebury. After heavy rain the day before it was a credit to the course management team that the course was well presented and provided a good test for the best junior boys in the County.
The U18s and U16s teed off at 8.30am for the first of their two rounds.
Eight of the top ranked ten boys in the county were included in a field of twenty-four so the competition was likely to be intense and so it transpired.
The last three groups included last year's Junior county champion Dylan John (Saltford) , Ashton Wylie,(Wells) Thomas Richardson (The Mendip) , Alex Marshall (Farrington 2021 Champion) ,Theo Anderson-Gannon (Yeovil) and Freddie Turnell (Burnham & Berrow)
With the 18th to play Dylan and Theo were at +2, Ashton was a further shot adrift and Freddie stood at level par. The 18th is a testing hole with a blind second shot to the green. Dylan was unfortunate to find tree trouble from the tee and finished round 1 with a double. Theo managed a good par, Freddie played a great tee shot but came up short with his approach and finished with a 5.
So after round 1 Freddie held a 1 shot lead at +1 over Theo and a 3 shot lead over Dylan.
The highlight of the first round was Cameron Fear's hole out from 185 yards on the first for an Eagle 2. He finished round 1 8 shots off the lead.
The second round got underway at 1.30pm. Dylan, Ashton and Theo played some impressive golf and got to within a couple of shots of Freddie. Freddie remained calm and played steady golf.
Ashton shot a second round 74 to finish at 9 over and set the club house target. Theo and Dylan finished in the penultimate group Dylan improved from the morning score with a solid 72, Theo shot a good 74 leaving the pair tied at 146 three better than Ashton.
Freddie stood on the 18th at 1 over and a 4-shot lead. His tee shot found the trees on the left , his provisional found the edge of the fairway. He managed to find his first ball and a chip out onto the fairway left him with a difficult approach which he played well coming up a little short of the green. An excellent chip and put resulted in a closing 5 and a total score of 143 and a 3 shot victory. Well done Freddie who will represent Somerset in the Champion of Champions at Woodall Spa later in the year.
In the U16 Championship there was a closely fought battle between last year's U16 champion Troy Young from Worlebury and Noah Jones from Oak Manor. In round 1 Noah shot 77 with Troy a shot back on 77. The lead changed hands a couple of times during round 2 with some good play from both boys. Ultimately Noah improved his round 1 score by 1 securing a winning total of 153. Troy battled well but just came up short with a closing 79 and a total of 157.
The overall Net prize winner was Morgan Couch from Taunton & Pickeridge. He shot rounds of 79 and 80 for a gross total of 159 and a net score of 141.

U18 Four Counties Championship Team Strokeplay
U18 Four Counties Matchplay Final Table
At a wind and rainswept Knighton Heath Golf Club, the Somerset Under 18 Squad successfully defended the Matchplay title in the Four Counties Tournament against Cornwall, Devon and Dorset.
In the opening fixture, Somerset beat Devon 8-6, with singles wins from Theo Anderson-Gannon, Tom Canavan and George Geddes. Team Captain Alex Marshall and Ashton Wylie both halved their games to give the team the best possible start.
Day 2 saw Somerset take on the hosts Dorset in the opening match. This was another close encounter, but Somerset took the honours with another 8-6 win. Theo, Tom, and Ashton put the Red Army on the road to victory by winning their singles, followed by a half from Alex, and a further half from Cameron Fear and Josh Mowat in the Foursomes saw our boys over the line.
The final match was against Cornwall with Somerset seeing out the day with a more comfortable 9-5 win. Theo led the way again, supported by further wins from Dylan John and Ashton with George securing a half in his game. Cameron and Josh sealed the deal with a win in the Foursomes.
There were very testing conditions in the Strokeplay tournament with Dorset taking the team competition with a total of 476. Somerset came 3rd overall. The individual title was won by Jack Kevern from Cornwall with a very impressive score of 73 with our Tom Canavan a couple of shots back in the runner-up position.
This was a very encouraging start to the season from Somerset, and they can look forward with confidence to the challenges to come.
Well played lads, great start to the season once again and really good to retain the Matchplay Trophy.
Tough few days in all sorts of weather.

Paul Mitchell Head Coach U18's
We have completed one of the coaching days at Farrington in November (20th) and have three more planned before the start of the season. Sunday 15th January, Sunday 12th February, Sunday 12th March.
All sessions start at 9.00am and finish at 4.30pm and are held this year at Farrington Park.
The under 18's have four coaches at each of the sessions;
Myself concentrating on chipping, bunkers, pitching distance control, long game basics and the understanding of their own individual golf swings as well as strategies to manage their games around the golf course.
Ollie Leett is a specialist putting coach based at Tickenham Golf Club who does both group tuition with the boys but mainly one to one putting sessions focusing on individual mechanics and improvements.
James Lambdon is an applied sports psychologist who works both in small groups and on a one to one basis with the players.
Will Poole is a strength and conditioning coach who specialises in movement for golf.
We tend to spilt the group of 13-15 golfers into four and then rotate each hour so that each player gets the benefit of each of the coaches. We always play a competitive nine holes in the afternoon playing various formats; Texas scrambles, foursomes, 4BBB, matchplay and strokeplay.
Each squad day we run a day order of merit and the boys accumulate points throughout the day which contribute to the player of the day. The winner in November was Freddie Turnell who won two sleeves of Pro V1
18 hole strokeplay championship followed by 3 inter-county matches.
