An exciting final played in difficult conditions produced the narrowest of victories for Paddy McLennan and his team from Minehead & West Someret. The weather looked promising but the heavens opened during the early holes. The greens held up well and were proving very receptive, invariably there were some accumulations of temporary water, but the players made light of these. Eventually the sunshine returned, waterproofs abandoned and the teams could concentrate on their games.
First game out was between Neil Mossman and and Simon Rudd who enjoyed quite a tussle with the Wells pairing of Andy Green and Ian Lunt, with the result always finely balanced. More on this later! Second out saw Wells close out their game, Bill McCollum and Nick Wilson seeing off Pete Young and Doug Hayhoe. In game three, David Hillier and Paul Fullbrook seemed to have control for Minehead, but had to endure a fightback from Simon Jackson and Duncan Gowan before prevailing on the final green
Game four also went to the wire before George Hampshire and John Proctor secured a second win for Minehead, beating Mark Barnes and Stuart Austwick on the 18th. The final match pitched the two Captains against each other, Paddy McLennan and Martin Hole for Minehead, with Mike Metcalfe partnering Glenn Crocker for Wells. The early advantage was in favour of the Minehead pair, but Glenn and Mike fought their way back into the game, clinching victory in the final holes.
So, with 2 points each, we can now return to Game 1. Andy and Ian went 1 up on 16, halved the 17th, but Neil and Simon played the 18th superbly to make the match all square. This meant that we had to sendback to the first for extra holes to decide the match. Neil and Simon won the 19th to secure the trophy for Minehead & West Somerset
Congratulations to both tems on reaching the final and producing a highly competitive match played in the best spirit. It was a real pleasure to watch.
