25th February, 2024 SENIORS CAPTAIN REPORT.

Following disappointing results from the Seniors in the Channel League and SWCGA Championship over the last 2 years, a number of players met to discuss the possibilities of forming an Order of Merit through the Winter months in line with those adopted by other Counties.

With the approval of the Executive, we identified 5 venues commencing in October at Burnham and Berrow and closing with the final leg at Cumberwell Park last Sunday. In between we played at Long Sutton, Weston Super Mare and Burnham & Berrow for a second visit. I wish to thanks those clubs who offered discounted green fees and to Burnham & Berrow the courtesy of their Channel course. The generosity of all those clubs enabled the initiative to keep within my projected budget. These events gave players the opportunity to play competitive golf at some of the courses that will be used in our home Channel League fixtures. Over the course of events 27 players benefited from the scheme that included 7 new players. This also created a bond with their fellow players and a better understanding of what is expected from them in order that they and the county can progress towards a more successful campaign.

In addition to the golf ,we held two in depth open discussions, dealing with a variety of topics in an attempt to discover why the results over the past 2 years resulted in Somerset finishing at the bottom of the league. In our final meeting we adopted a SWOT analysis inviting small groups of players to make their contribution and I know everyone present found this to be extremely beneficial. My thanks to co-selectors Jerry Hodge and James Ward for their input and presentation.

I know from speaking with all of the players who have taken part, how much they enjoyed and appreciated the support from the County . I am delighted with their commitment and effort and they will go into the season with a more positive mind and prepared for the challenge ahead.Our first match is scheduled for April 30th against Dorset and over the next couple of weeks we will meet and select players for our opening match.
