5 Counties Tournament Report – Perranporth Golf Club
Sunday 21st September saw the annual 5 Counties tournament take place at Perranporth Golf Club , hosted this year by Cornwall Golf Union. Format: each county (Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire) putting forward a team of six under-12 players, with the best five nett scores counting towards the main team prize. There were also prizes up for grabs for the lowest three gross scores.
Somerset headed down on Saturday for a practice round. Things didn’t look promising when we arrived at 2pm to find the rain lashing down and running down the 1st fairway. When the rain eventually eased off, it was replaced by winds gusting up to 35mph. Still, the boys wrapped up, braved the elements, and went out to test the links. Afterwards, everyone met up for tea together, which was a great way to end the day.
Sunday – tournament day – brought more of the same. The rain was back and the wind never really let up, making for some seriously tough conditions out on the course. Despite that, the boys knuckled down and produced some excellent golf against the odds.
When all the cards were in, Somerset came away with a very solid 2nd place finish in the team event, just behind the home side Cornwall. On top of that, Somerset also featured in the individual gross prizes, with Ollie Roach picking up 4th place and George Marshall taking 5th – a great achievement given the conditions.
A big thank you goes to all the parents for their support, to Perranporth Golf Club for looking after us so well, and to Cornwall Golf Union for hosting a brilliant event.
